Zainab here. Come on, let’s chat about what happens #bts (behindthescenes) at these fashion shows. Only one word can describe what happens backstage and that word is “crazy”. Backstage is where it all happens – the good, the bad and the ugly. What happens on stage is the ‘clean’ version of the backstage drama. From the designer trying to ensure everything goes as planned, to the stylist always standing by to fit the models into their next outfit, the make-up artist giving a retouch every time and of course, the model changing into his/her required outfit in what can only be termed as the ‘speed of light’.
As a model, it is always such an experience. A fashion show is like a well oiled machine. Everything has a place and everyone has a role. Every person there is playing their part to ensure a great show for the audience. Models are expected to be completely attentive and adhere to backstage rules. Feeling relaxed and socializing with other models can help ease tension and nervousness especially for new models.
As a model it’s your job to make sure that when you stomp out on that runway, the audience shouldn’t see any of that craziness and stress you just came out of. Your job is to sell what you’re wearing and make every person there want to buy the clothes off your back.
So as soon as you step onto that stage, you’ll have to shake off that argument you just had with that other model about who ate the last Samosa. You’ll have to forget about how the makeup artist had to change your makeup at the last minute and the way he/she was roughly wiping your face as if they were scrubbing their kitchen floor. Or how the designer turned into a different person and screamed at you to change the lineup because he/she didn’t like the original lineup. Or… There’re so many things happening backstage, but it doesn’t matter. The audience doesn’t care about that. They paid good money to come see a fashion show and as a model, it’s your job to shake it all off and perform.
So you do. You strut as if the fate of the world depended on your walk. And when it’s all said and done, all you’re left wondering is when you’ll get to do it all over again!
